Japanese 314
Course Description: A focused analysis of historical and modern Japanese society through works of art and media including photography, film, maps, and other visual documents. Students learn to extract information from images as part of a visual analysis. They will also deal with social geographical methods for understanding population density, urban flows, economic disparities, transportation, and built environments. Students will analyze and compare what they understand about Japanese culture with other, more familiar environments. Taught in English.
Reflective Narrative:
I was not yet a Japanese major at this time but a minor. This course gave me a greater insight into the visual beauty Japan had outside of Pop culture. I grew up watching Anime and reading Manga but this course showed me how much more to Japan than that. I also learned a lot more about the history and walked away informed and more prepared for my study abroad experience later in 2014.
