Courses Taken
Japanese 1&2 ( Toyo University )
JAPN 300: Intro to Adv Communication
JAPN 304: Intro Translate & Interpret
JAPN 380: Land and people
JAPN 303: Business Japanese
Reflective Narrative
1.1 :These classes were constructed to help us, the students all learn Japanese and to be able to apply that knowledge in presentations, mock interviews and more. In Japanese 300 for example we did many projects and assignments that contributed to this. Learning about the culture as well as the language helped me to understand the intricacies of the language. This lead us to learn about proper mannerisms in proper settings, in fact Japanese 303 has a focus in workplace situations and appropriate body language, conjugation and more. In this video project we displayed our knowledge of Business Japanese. Japanese 300 also gave me a great overall standing for Japanese that I would use the following year while studying abroad.
1.2: During my year abroad in Toyo University I realized that I had so much still to learn. It was a wonderful immersive experience and while I was placed in lower level classes and felt discouraged I learned a lot. Being able to ask my friends what words or kanji meant outside of class and being able to apply my past knowledge and new knowledge on a daily basis in my interactions helped me improve my interpersonal and interpretive skills. I was afraid of communicating when I was in America due to my lack of knowledge or being laughed at in the past. I felt truly encouraged during my time abroad to continue in spite of that fact.
Upon my return to CSUMB taking Japanese 304 and 404 at the same time helped me learn aspects of the language I had not yet considered. Similar to silent letters in english or certain punctuation we have I didn't know the meaning of certain radicals, punctuation placements and more in Japanese. All of these courses in combination have helped my overall ability to comprehend, communicate confidently and with a sense of pride. This all lead to me completing my capstone entirely in 2016
