Kamau Carter Capstone Title: The Perception of Nerds and Otaku in America and Japan Advisors: Dr. Yoshiko Saito-Abbott Dr. Shingeko Sekine Abstract:In both America and Japan, people often like to put labels on others. In the 1900s in America and Japan the respective terms 'nerd' and 'otaku' came to be used as labels. Many people are referred to by these terms due to their personality, appearance, way of dressing and their penchant for comic books, video games and anime. This study was guided by these research questions: “What are the stereotypes of Nerds/Otaku in America and Japan?”and “What are the stereotypes of Nerds/Otaku in America and Japan?”. In order to investigate these matters, a questionnaire survey was created and sent out which asked a variety of questions concerning the views of 'nerds' and 'otaku' of American students and Japanese students. The results of the American survey show that American students hold a stereotypical view regarding the term 'nerd'. In other words, American students considered 'nerds' to be those who enjoy studying, are socially weak, wear glasses and lack fashion sense etc. On the other hand in Japan 'otaku' are seen as being people who like comic books, video games and collecting. It could also be seen that the participants of the survey believe that many Asian people are 'nerds' or 'otaku'. It is clear that this perception is influenced by representation seen on television and in film in both America and Japan. Especially in the case of Japanese people, it seems that the influence of anime on this perception is strong. It is clear that in both America and Japan there isn't a good impression regarding the physical appearance of 'nerds' and 'otaku' either. Research Questions:
